Maryland Democrats Unite at Victory ’08 Bash

Thursday, July 31, 2008

1,000 People Party for a Strong 2008 Maryland Campaign

Effort, Energy and Dollars to work for Change

Baltimore, MD – Over a thousand Democrats and friends gathered for a night of serious fun and serious fundraising that echoes the grassroots success of the Barack Obama campaign. Most of the enthusiastic party-goers invested a few dollars each – in this case $50 per person - for victory in November. Over $100,000 dollars was raised for The Maryland Democratic Party’s Victory ’08 Campaign.

“This was a great night made even greater by incredible participation and energy of grassroots Democrats – and some who aren’t, yet - who want to invest both their time and their own dollars to bring change,” said Michael Cryor, Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party.  “This was just a brilliant show of how unified we are behind Barack Obama and every one of our Democratic House candidates.”

Governor Martin O’Malley and Congressman Elijah Cummings, who serve as co-chairs of Maryland’s Delegation to the Democratic National Convention, welcomed Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, nearly every member of Maryland’s Congressional Delegation and a host of state and local leaders gathered to celebrate the party’s opportunities in 2008.

Maryland’s unity behind Barack Obama translates to the grassroots effort to send him a Congress that will also work for change. In Maryland, that means electing two more Democrats to the U.S. House of Representatives and State’s Attorney Frank Kratovil (MD-1) and Mayor Jennifer Dougherty (MD-6) took some of the loudest cheers of the night.

“Raising campaign dollars is important but it’s even more important for us to acknowledge and channel the concerns, caring and commitment of so many Marylanders into a positive effort for change,” added Cryor. “That’s what we really accomplished this evening and that is what we will continue to do from now until November.”
